Just say the name. “Waikiki.” Immediately you think of shining beaches and jeweled waters. Of “hanging loose” and living the good life. And dropping in at LIK WAIKIKI just increases the peace.
The Details:
Waikiki. The very name evokes beauty, excitement and a sense of romance. Which is exactly what you can expect when you visit LIK WAIKIKI, the most engaging business in the Waikiki shopping district. The sea breeze almost ushers you into this enclave of world-renowned fine art. Locals and tourists alike have made the gallery a favored destination since it opened in March 2006, many leaving with Peter Lik originals to grace their homes and add something to their lives. LIK WAIKIKI is a true Hawai’ian highlight.
Q&A with Gallery Director Steven Maier
How long have you been director at LIK WAIKIKI?
I’ve been here from the opening over 4 ½ years ago, most of that time as the Associate Director. Only recently was I made Director. We are in the process of bringing in Kerry Bohanan from LIK LA JOLLA™ to co-direct.
What do you like most about your job?
Watching the collectors smile and light up with the WOW experience when they see Peter’s work.
What’s your favorite Peter Lik photograph?
“Flat Iron.” Peter captures the iconic stature of the building. It looks like a Roman column on steroids. I almost expect to see Spider Man (it was Peter Parker’s headquarters in the movie) rappelling from the top. I love the elegant simplicity of the work.
Do you have a memorable collector experience?
A collector came in with her very young son and he wanted to touch every piece and his mother kept telling him “not to touch” the art. I said, “You can touch it with your eyes.” I cracked up when he went up to the next piece and literally put his eye on it. It taught me to be careful about what I say to kids.
